Homeboy Industries goes gang-busters
By Edward Iwata, USA TODAY 7/11/05
They come from the region's most notorious gangs and housing projects. But they've chosen to leave their crews and take up honest, blue-collar trades that often resurrect their lives. Their slogans: "Jobs, Not Jails" and "Nothing Stops a Bullet Like a Job." The non-profit and Boyle also have been praised by first lady Laura Bush, and they have gained national media attention. Homeboy Industries — with the help of its board, business consultants and actors Angelica Huston and Martin Sheen — has embarked on corporate-style goals, including:
•Small businesses. Homeboy Industries' popular silk-screening business sells wholesale clothing and other goods with the "Homeboy Industries" logo.
Lastly, the non-profit plans to reopen its bakery, which burned down a few years ago. Former gang members are training at the Mi Vida-My Life bakery in Lynwood, and they'll soon market Homeboy Industries breads, muffins and cakes to cafes and stores.
